Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has recently come out in response to comments about protection rules for QBs. The discussion opened up mainly after linebacker for the Houston Texans, Azeez Al-Shaair, was banned for three games after Jacksonville’s QB Trevor Lawrence was injured as a result of a late hit.
After Lawrence’s concussion, many came forward to pin the blame on one or the other. Tom Brady, former quarterback for the New England Patriots, went on to say that if the defense was being fined for being late, the offense too deserved to be fined for a similar strategy. Mahomes opened up about the topic in a recent interview.
“I’m just playing football at the end of the day. I don’t feel like I’ve ever put anybody in jeopardy of not wanting to hit me. I know when you get in the open field guys want to hit you and I get down when I feel like it’s necessary to get down, but there’s times in big spots in the games where I know I need to get first downs and I go for it.”
“It’s not taking advantage of any rules and I think—more than anything—it’s me being smart in the moment of knowing when not to and when to go for it. You’ve seen that from me in the playoffs and I feel like you see that from me in big spots in games because I know that sliding at that moment is not going to get us the win and I’m all about winning.” Mahomes said via KSHB 41.
Patrick Mahomes has been accused of fake plays in the past, when the quarterback looked like he was going to slide, but managed to go for a few extra yards. the 29-year-old QB definitely disagreed that he is trying to take advantage of the rules. While many fans of Mahomes supported his stance, others went on to comment negatively against the QB.
Emmanuel Sanders Blames Patrick Mahomes For Early Retirement
On another note, Patrick Mahomes was blamed by Buffalo Bills former wide receiver, Emmanuel Sanders for causing him to retire early. In a recent interview with ‘The Facility’, Sanders went on to discuss what led him to retire after only 13 seasons, despite having plenty of potential.
After Mahomes almost single-handedly pushed the Buffalo Bills out during an AFC division round of playoffs, Sanders made the tough decision to retire from the sport. His interview just goes on to show the level of threat that Mahomes poses to other players on the field.
