All eyes were on the action at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, as the 2025 edition of the US Open was reaching its conclusion. Even Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes had his attention captured by the thrilling end of the tournament.
After 72 holes, it was JJ Spaun who won the title, as he closed it out with one of the best shots ever in major history. The 34-year-old Spaun, who had a bad start to the fourth round of the tourney, drained a long putt to bag the victory — his first in a major tournament ever.
“I knew, based [on] what the crowd was saying, that I felt like if I two-putted, I would probably win,” Spaun said after his win (h/t Mark Schlabach of ESPN). “But I didn’t want to look because I didn’t want to play defensive. I didn’t want to do anything dumb, trying to protect a three-putt or something.

Patrick Mahomes shares reaction to stunning US Open conclusion

Mahomes surely knows what it’s like to be on top. The three-time Super Bowl champion went on social media and tweeted “Wow what a putt!” after Spaun sank the 64½-foot birdie putt on the last hole to edge Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre by just two strokes.
Spaun finished the tournament with a 1-under 279 score. The day started poorly for Spaun, as he had five bogeys on the first six holes, but he managed to steady himself the rest of the way.
Mahomes can use that as inspiration for the upcoming 2025 NFL season, with the Chiefs looking to get back up after falling short of completing a three-peat in the Super Bowl era.
