As the 2023 NFL offseason continues to draw closer, most teams are already preparing to make efforts to improve their rosters for next season. One of those teams is the New England Patriots, who ended up missing the playoffs in disappointing fashion this year. Bill Belichick and company have some work to do in order to get back to being a serious contender in the AFC.
When looking at the Patriots’ roster, there are a few obvious areas that need improvement. One of those areas is at the wide receiver position.
Mac Jones put together an up-and-down season this year. While he had some rough moments, it still seems like he’s the face of the franchise moving forward. Adding more weapons for him to work with would be a smart move for the Patriots to make.
One Intriguing Free Agency Option For The Patriots
According to Bleacher Report, there is an intriguing name to keep an eye on at wide receiver in free agency. That name would be Indianapolis Colts’ impending free agent Parris Campbell. They also listed Brandin Cooks as a potential target via trade should New England choose to go that route.
“Campbell finally showed what he could do when healthy last season, setting career highs in catches (63), receiving yards (623) and touchdowns (3). His ability to rack up yards after the catch would mesh well with New England’s quick passing game.”
Throughout his career with the Colts, Campbell has struggled with injury issue after injury issues. Thankfully, he was able to get things turned around this year.
Granted, the Colts are going to want to re-sign him if they can. He is a big part of the wide receiver room in Indianapolis and likely has interest in staying with the team as well. That being said, a team like the Patriots could come in with an aggressive offer and entice him to leave town.

As previously mentioned, Campbell racked up 63 catches for 623 yards and three touchdowns. There is still plenty of room for him to grow, but the signs are there that he can be a big playmaker.
Adding a veteran wideout like Cooks could make more sense, depending on the price. But, if the Houston Texans are asking for a lot in return for a Cooks trade, pivoting to a free agent like Campbell would make sense. Campbell would not break the bank, but could be the same kind of impact player, even though he’s currently unproven.
Expect to see the Patriots be extremely active this offseason. New England does not like missing the playoffs and will do everything they can to get back on track in 2023.
