Background:
It has been an unusual off-season for Packer’s wide receivers. There is no established number one wideout for the first time in a long time. Davante Adams has left the building and the Packers have a bunch of new faces in an attempt to fill that void. Three new rookies and one free agent pick-up to be exact.
Recently, it has been the free agent pick-up, Sammy Watkins, making a name for himself. He has been making tough plays and wowing the coaching staff. Watkins has even received praise from Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers stated “Every since the Saints practice, the first one, Sammy has been a different player. He’s been super reliable. Every practice he’s made a bunch of plays. Today, made a bunch of plays again.” after Thursday’s practice. There are a lot of unknowns with the current Packers wide receivers, however, this is a step in the right direction.
Analyst Comment:
The Packers signed Watkins at the end of free agency in hopes of a bounce-back year. Watkins’s history has never been an issue of athleticism or intelligence, it’s injury. He has missed a combined 30 games over the last 7 years. Watkins needs to avoid injury and continue to prove himself, otherwise, injuries will overshadow his talent.
