The Packers have had some legendary players over the years. One of the ones in recent memory was Clay Matthews. Matthews spent 10 seasons with the Packers winning one Super Bowl with them in 2010. His impact plays changed games. It looks like his playing days are over. Packers linebacker Clay Matthews unofficially retires.

After the 2019 season with the LA Rams, Matthews was hoping to find the right opportunity in 2020. That opportunity did not come and he walked away from the game. In a recent interview, Matthews talked about how much he has been enjoying it. In a Zoom interview as part of a promotion for Tide Matthews said, “I thought it was pretty telling when the games came on and I enjoyed having a beer and smoking some fatty meats on Sunday as opposed to feeling that anxiety of gameday.” Sounds like Matthews is loving eating and drinking whatever he wants while he watches the game.
Clay Matthews Legacy As A Packer
Matthews was a first round pick in 2009 at the end of the first round. He immediately made an impact. He set the rookie sack record with 10 in his first year. It was his second year that he really took a leap. In 2010 he had 13.5 regular season stats but was a monster in the playoffs. With 3.5 sacks and a momentum changing forced fumble in the Super Bowl his postseason was even more memorable. Overall, Matthews racked up 83.5 sacks making him Green Bay’s all time sack leader.
I expect to see Clay Matthews at least in the Packers Hall of Fame one day. He was an iconic player on the field and fun to watch play. It is great to see how much he is enjoying retirement.
