The Packers defense is full of stars. Jaire Alexander just signed a massive contract extension. Rashan Gary looks to build off of his stellar season last year. Kenny Clark is a top 10 defensive lineman. One player that rarely gets talked about is Adrian Amos. Since he came to the Packers, he has been a solid force in the secondary. This year, Adrian Amos is primed for a huge season.

    Amos’ Packers Career

The Most Important Green Bay Packers: Adrian Amos Is The 'Steady Eddie' Of The Secondary

It is often hard to quantify with stats how good secondary players are. For example, Jaire Alexander often does not have a lot of pass breakups but that is because they aren’t throwing at him. Amos has compiled 6 interceptions throughout his Packers career and has played every regular season game. His completion percentage when thrown at hovers around 65%. However, a closer look at the numbers reveal how good of a tackler Amos is. Last season Amos only gave up 442 pass yards but only 183 coming after the catch. Amos limits the damage of passes that are completed and gives the defense another chance to make a play. Having a rock solid safety at the back of the defense is a huge asset for the Packers.

    Amos’ Skill Set

Adrian Amos restructures contract to save Packers $750k in salary cap space for 2021 - Acme Packing Company

Amos is able to fly all over the field. Early in training camp, he has been asked to cover WRs, TEs, and RBs and does so extremely well. His instincts are exceptional and allow him to read the play and make the correct decision of where to go on the field. Because of this instinct, this allows other players on the field to have more freedom. CBs can have more freedom to sit on routes knowing that Amos is over the top in case the WR tries a double move. The other safety can come down to stop the run or a short pass without leaving someone running down the middle of the field uncovered. Amos is a smart player and consistent player. You know exactly what you are getting from year to year.

    Amos’ Rank Among Safeties

Darnell Savage fails to make plays in Packers secondary in 2021 season

Pro Football Focus (PFF) just released their rankings of all NFL players. Adrian Amos came in at number 40. Of all NFL, not just safeties, PFF has Amos as a top 50 player. In terms of safeties, his 26 pass breakups with the Packers since 2019 is first at his position. His coverage grade is fourth among safeties. For a top 50 player and top 5 player at his position, you do not hear Amos’ name talked about that much. Amos quietly has produced over the last 3 years for the Packers.

It is a contract year for Amos. With his past production, Amos is primed for a huge season. He is a staple for the Packers defense and it will be fun to see him anchor this elite secondary.
