Ole Miss’s college football playoff hopes faded on Saturday after they lost to Kentucky at home. Now, they can’t slip up again, or they will not be playing meaningful football in December.
The Rebels have one of the easier nonconference schedules in college football, but that won’t do their resume any favors. The loss to Kentucky wasn’t something they could afford when they still have to play on the road at LSU and host Georgia.
There is a great chance Ole Miss will lose to LSU and Georgia, putting them at three losses. That would put them out of the playoffs, which is horrible news in a bunch of ways.
Lane Kiffin Could Leave Ole Miss
First, Ole Miss fans will be upset that their team isn’t in the postseason, which also leaves the door open for their head coach, Lane Kiffin, to leave and join a new team.
Another team in the SEC, Florida, looks to be making a coaching change this offseason and will most likely fire Billy Napier, and Kiffin has been rumored to be favored to land the job.
If Ole Miss doesn’t make the playoffs, then it will be easier for Kiffin to leave since he won’t be coaching a team that is trying to win the title, and the first playoff game isn’t until the middle of December, which would put Kiffin at a disadvantage for the Florida job if he was still coaching that late.
Florida will want to hire a coach and have him in the building before the transfer portal and early signing day opens in early December.
It is important to hire your head coach early in the process since players must decide whether they want to stay committed to the school or enter the portal.
The Gators have one of the best young quarterbacks in freshman DJ Lagway, and the program is going to need to have their coach hired and try to convince him to stay before the portal opens up on December 9th.
If Ole Miss is in the playoffs, then Kiffin can’t be hired for the Florida job until he loses, which would be at least December 15th. That would be way too late, and the Gators would need their head coach by then.
If the Rebels aren’t in the playoffs, their season will be over at the end of November, allowing Kiffin to leave and take the Florida job.
The loss to Kentucky was more major than people think because it could have cost Ole Miss its playoff hopes and its head coach.
