Oklahoma pulled off a major upset last night, taking down the 7th-ranked team in the country by 21 points; the final score was 24-3. Alabama’s offense couldn’t seem to get anything going; they were held scoreless in the final 3 quarters of the game. Road games in the SEC are extremely difficult to win, even against a 5-5 squad. Turnovers and sloppy play will lose you the game.
The Sooners handed Bama their third loss of the season; the Tide haven’t lost three games in a season since 2010. Oklahoma took advantage of Alabama’s horrible offensive showing; Jalen Milroe threw three interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown. Dominating offensively on the ground, the Sooners had two players rush for over 100 yards: Jackson Arnold and Xavier Robinson. Before the game, Alabama had hopes of winning a national championship; any hopes of even making the College Football Playoff may be crushed after this loss.
Oklahoma’s Future
The Sooners move to 6-5 on the year with their last game being in Death Valley against LSU to wrap up the season. The win against Bama is huge for Oklahoma in their first year in the SEC; it also qualifies them for a bowl game. It’s possible that they have found a recipe to win late in the season, something that they can carry over into the LSU game and hopefully a bowl game as well. It will be interesting to see if they can perform at this level for the rest of the season.
Alabama’s future
After dropping a game to an unranked team that they were heavily favored against, it is hard to tell whether the College Football Playoff is in the cards for this Alabama team. The Crimson Tide have a few great wins under their belt, such as Georgia and Tennessee, that could play a huge role in squeezing them in. There is still a decent chance that if they close the season out with a win against rival Auburn, they will punch a ticket to the CFP. The ESPN Playoff predictor had them at 37% before this game, so the odds could have only grown smaller since then.
