The Oklahoma football team is 4-1 and will remain firmly in the AP Poll Top 25 after going on the road and beating the Auburn Tigers this weekend. However, the 27-21 victory only came to fruition after the Oklahoma Sooners rallied late, forcing a pick-six, a missed field goal, and two turnovers on downs while scoring 17 unanswered points to finish the fourth quarter.
The latest win for the Sooners keeps their College Football Playoff hopes alive in their inaugural season competing within the SEC. It also makes true freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins a winner in his first collegiate start. Nevertheless, Oklahoma football fans were pleasantly surprised with the victory on the heels of a disastrous first three quarters.
SEC Road Victory Leaves Oklahoma Football Fans Optimistic
According to Oklahoma football insider Tom Green:
Freshman QB Michael Hawkins Jr. — in his first start — put his body on the line and displayed an unflinching determination while helping propel No. 21 Oklahoma to an improbable comeback win at Auburn.
After relieving starting quarterback Jackson Arnold at halftime of last weekend’s ranked loss to the Tennessee Volunteers, Hawkins made his first college start on Saturday against Auburn despite the team missing their top five wide receivers. Following a six-play 68-yard scoring drive concluding with a Hawkins rushing touchdown, the Oklahoma Sooners gained just 104 yards in their ensuing six drives. They were outscored 14-3 during that stretch. However, Oklahoma caught fire in the fourth quarter, with the offense and defense firing on all cylinders.
Oklahoma scored on two of their three fourth-quarter drives, headlined by a Hawkins 60-yard pass to wideout J.J. Hester. Conversely, the defense forced an improbable pick-six, while Auburn failed to convert on two fourth-down attempts. Oklahoma football’s strong finish in Saturday’s conference tilt has the OU fandom encouraged, with Hawkins, head coach Brent Venables, and the Sooners heading into a bye week before their annual clash with rival Texas:
