Last week, the Oklahoma football program announced that wide receiver Jayden Gibson suffered a knee injury in practice on Tuesday. Gibson underwent an MRI, and on Tuesday, head coach Brent Venables announced the results, with the former top recruit set for a season-ending knee injury.
Gibson went down hard in practice last week, and despite the timing of the injury happening in the preseason, the wideout will miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign. Meanwhile, fellow wide receiver Deion Burks, formerly of the Purdue Boilermakers, was arrested earlier this offseason for driving under the influence, speeding, and transporting an open container of alcohol.
Oklahoma Football WR Jayden Gibson: Will Miss 2024 Season
On Tuesday, head coach Brent Venables officially ruled out wide receiver Jayden Gibson for the 2024 season following a leg injury earlier this month. Gibson will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL. The Winter Garden, Florida, received high praise this offseason and was projected to fight for a significant role alongside fellow pass catchers Deion Burks, Nic Anderson, and Andrel Anthony.

A four-star prospect in the class of 2022, Gibson landed with Oklahoma football over his hometown Florida Gators, among others. After snagging only one catch for 12 yards as a true freshman, the speedy wideout played a more prominent role in 2023. Gibson tallied 14 catches for 375 yards and five touchdowns across 13 games last season. Gibson scored a touchdown in his team’s final three regular season games. He posted six receptions for 196 yards during that stretch. However, Gibson will now miss the 2024 season, leaving a void in Oklahoma’s receiver room.
Oklahoma Football WR Depth Chart Sans Jayden Gibson
The Oklahoma football program will play the 2024 season without the services of wideout Jayden Gibson following the announcement of his torn ACL. Oklahoma will likely lean on senior Jalil Farooq, sophomore Jaquaize Pettaway, and former transfer J.J. Hester to replace the potential production left by the injured Gibson. Farooq is the likeliest to see more playing time, recording 86 receptions, 1,229 yards, and seven touchdowns in three seasons with the Sooners. Meanwhile, Pettaway is a former four-star prospect who netted 11 receptions last year, while Hester enters his fifth college season.
Oklahoma will join the SEC next season after nearly a century in the Big 12. Outside the trio of Pettaway, Hester, and Gibson, Oklahoma houses Nic Anderson and Andrel Anthony. Anderson earned All-Freshman honors last season for a 798-yard, ten-touchdown campaign, while Anthony recorded 27 receptions for 429 yards and a score. The Sooners will also welcome Purdue Boilermakers transfer Deion Burks. The second-team All-Big Ten honoree collected 47 receptions for 629 yards and seven scores in 2023.
