On Saturday, the Oklahoma football program played its third straight home game to open the 2024 season, hosting the Tulane Green Wave of the AAC. The Oklahoma Sooners emerged victorious 34-19, with a much better showing from their offensive unit. However, Zac Alley and Brent Venables’ defense again stole the show, forcing two turnovers, registering three sacks, and keeping the Green Wave just 5-of-15 on third down.
R Mason Thomas led the charge for Oklahoma’s defense, with the defensive lineman tallying three tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Thomas won the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week Award for his efforts.

R Mason Thomas, a four-star recruit in the class of 2022, recorded seven tackles and a sack during his true freshman season before dealing with injuries for the first half of the 2023 season. Thomas missed substantial time but finished his second year in Norman, Oklahoma, with nine tackles, three TFLs, and a sack. He collected nearly all his production in the team’s final two games.
Expectations were high this year for R Mason Thomas following a healthy offseason. He has continued to deliver for the Sooners in the early going, with his best performance coming last weekend. The six-foot-two, 250-pounder accumulated three tackles, three sacks, a PBU, and forced a fumble, which he recovered. He became the first Oklahoma football product to record a three-sack game since Nik Bonitto in 2020.
