The Oklahoma football program is gearing up for its first season in the SEC after more than a century in the Big 12. But before they dive into their brutal SEC schedule, they have three non-conference games, beginning with a home game against the Temple Owls. On Wednesday, head coach Brent Venables announced that one of their star offensive playmakers will not be playing in the season opener on Friday.
Star wide receiver and sophomore Nic Anderson will not play in the Sooners’ season opener against the Temple Owls. Anderson, who received FWAA Freshman All-American Honors last season, was labeled “a little limited” and “day-to-day” by head coach Brent Venables late last week due to injury.
Oklahoma Football Announces Wide Receiver Out For Week 1 Clash
According to OUInsider:
#Sooners head coach Brent Venables has ruled WR Nic Anderson OUT for Friday’s game against Temple. While Anderson will not play, WR Andrel Anthony will be available.
Anderson enters the year as a member of the preseason watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, a recognition given to the nation’s top wide receiver. Anderson shined as a redshirt freshman last season, recording 38 receptions, 768 receiving yards, and a team-high ten receiving touchdowns. The wideout collected 18 receptions for 301 yards and two scores in the season’s final four weeks.
Earlier this month, Oklahoma announced that fellow pass-catcher and former top recruit Jayden Gibson would miss the entirety of the 2024 season following knee surgery. However, with Gibson and Anderson unavailable, head coach Brent Venables reported that wide receiver Andrel Anthony would dress in Friday’s opener against the Temple Owls. Anthony enters his fourth college season with Oklahoma football and has posted 46 receptions for 757 yards and five scores during that span.
