Oklahoma football, specifically the offense, did not show up in Saturday’s 34-3 blowout loss against archrival Texas. In the loss, OU tallied 237 total yards, let up five sacks, perpetrated two turnovers, and committed seven penalties. After an epic come-from-behind win in last year’s rendition of the Red River Rivalry, the Oklahoma Sooners did little to strike fear in the heart of Texas, never truly competing at any point during the rivalry tilt.
Postgame, Texas did not hide their emotion, celebrating their win at the Cotton Bowl while pushing their record to 6-0 and remaining atop the AP Top 25 Poll. With the blowout win over Oklahoma football, Texas defenders Anthony Hill Jr. and Barryn Sorrell planted a UT flag at midfield through the heart of a crimson and white Baker Mayfield jersey. Mayfield played for three years with OU football. Naturally, Oklahoma fans did not take kindly to the antics displayed by UT postgame.
Ex-Oklahoma Football Superstar Baker Mayfield’s Jersey Dishonored by UT
According to Bleacher Report on Twitter:
Texas plants Longhorns flag through an Oklahoma Baker Mayfield jersey. No love lost in the Red River rivalry.
(via @CJVogel_OTF)
With Oklahoma football and the Texas Longhorns playing 120 times since 1900, no love is lost between the two schools, separated by just 370 miles and the Red River. The depth of the rivalry became even more apparent on Saturday when Texas planted a flag at midfield following the win. Notably, the flag sat atop a Baker Mayfield Oklahoma Sooners jersey, their rival’s starting signal-caller from 2015 to 2017. Famously, Mayfield planted an OU flag at midfield following the team’s massive win over the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2017.
During his three seasons against Texas, Mayfield dominated the Longhorns, registering seven touchdowns against three picks. More importantly, Mayfield eclipsed 300 passing yards twice, with Oklahoma going 2-1 in those matchups. He also completed around 70% of his passes across the three games. An icon with Oklahoma football despite his star status in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Sooners faithful are angry with the treatment of a jersey representing a school icon:

I’m most certainly no OU guy, but firing a cannon ball through a guy that didn’t even play and was your actual father figure is not a flex.
— Reagan Harris (OSU Mart) (@OKSTMart) October 12, 2024
Baker owns texas so this is kinda insane?
— flo (@flooduck) October 12, 2024
This would be cool if Mayfield hadn’t been gone more than half a decade at this point
