Oklahoma football will play in the Armed Forces Bowl later this month. In the matchup against Navy, the Oklahoma Sooners will turn to backup quarterback Michael Hawkins, with off-and-on starter Jackson Arnold darting for the Auburn Tigers via the transfer portal. However, on Wednesday, Oklahoma added a new quarterback via the portal, replacing Arnold and likely pushing Hawkins to the bench to start a second consecutive year.
The Oklahoma football team will be the new home of Washington State quarterback John Mateer. Mateer, a star passer with Washington State, entered the transfer portal as the top-ranked player per 247Sports. With the addition, some Oklahoma fans are curious about how the team will handle the quarterback position, with Hawkins and Mateer destined for a roster spot in 2025.
Oklahoma Football Fans Divided On QB Position
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3:
Breaking: Washington State star transfer QB John Mateer has Committed to Oklahoma, @on3sports has learned.
The 6’1 220 QB threw for 3,139 yards & 29 TDs this season. Also added 826 yards & 15 TDs on the ground. Top QB in the portal.
On Wednesday, Oklahoma football became the new program for top transfer portal prospect John Mateer. Mateer, a three-star recruit in the 2022 class, sat behind future NFL star Cam Ward during his first two seasons before taking over in 2024. He threw for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns, and seven picks while rushing for 826 yards and 15 scores. Washington State went 8-4, earning a trip to the Holiday Bowl against Syracuse.
Mateer’s entrance, paired with former starter Jackson Arnold’s departure, likely positions himself as the incumbent starter in 2025. However, Oklahoma football still has Michael Hawkins, a true freshman signal-caller who had one touchdown against two picks this season while operating with a depleted wide receiver core. With Hawkins remaining loyal to the program since the opening of the transfer portal, the OU faithful sit divided on which gunslinger deserves the nod next season:
What does this mean for Hawkins, our QB, that stayed here because of his love for OU ???

Hawkins is better and he is not chasing money at the expense of loyalty. Guy only needed a qb coach.

Thank God! That first year in the SEC was absolutely brutal. Now we at least have a chance to be competitive. Oklahoma should never ever look like that again. Unacceptable
