On Saturday, the Oklahoma football program will welcome the Tulane Green Wave to Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium as they try to stay undefeated before entering their first season of SEC play. Tulane is not an average non-Power Four school, going 24-6 since the start of the 2021 season. The Green Wave lost four-year starting quarterback Michael Pratt to the NFL Draft this offseason. Still, they remain stacked with offensive weapons, including former Oklahoma football wide receiver Mario Williams.
Williams, a four-star recruit in the class of 2021, played for the Oklahoma Sooners as a freshman before following head coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams to the USC Trojans. Williams, now attending his third school in four years, spoke to the OU Daily before Saturday’s tilt, expressing his love for his old school. However, Oklahoma football fans were not receptive to Williams’ remarks, with the team and wideout having a less-than-ideal split before the 2022 season.
Oklahoma Football Fans Disregard Mario Williams Ahead of Revenge Game
According to OU Daily Sports:
ICYMI: “(I’m most looking forward to) playing in front of those 90,000 fans and showing them I still have love for Oklahoma.” Why former #Sooners wide receiver Mario Williams is excited to return to Norman when OU takes on Tulane:
Mario Williams, a unique talent from Oklahoma football’s 2021 recruiting class, will return to Norman on Saturday for the first time in three years. In his lone season with the Sooners, Williams posted 35 receptions for 380 yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman pass-catcher for quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams. However, Williams and head coach Lincoln Riley left for USC following the season, with Mario Williams following suit. The wideout rotated at receiver for two years with USC before becoming the Tulane Green Wave’s top target this season.
Williams also said he had fun during his lone season with the Sooners. However, the Oklahoma faithful remember Williams for disrespecting the university on his way out. Many fans pointed towards Williams “stomping” on team gear after announcing his exit from the now-SEC program. Those same fans had no love lost when it came to Williams making headlines on Thursday:
Dude stomped on OU gear when he left. We do not have any love for you https://t.co/FnbA62kkWk
