The Oklahoma football program lived out its worst nightmare last weekend. Entering the Red River Rivalry with a 4-1 record and a chance to dethrone the Texas Longhorns as the top team in the country, the Oklahoma Sooners lost 34-3 in a one-sided affair. In the 120th edition of the Red River Rivalry, Oklahoma scored first before Texas rattled off 34 unanswered points while nearly doubling up their rival regarding total offense. Following the blowout loss, the Sooners are outside the AP Poll Top 25 and near the bottom of the SEC standings while eyeing back-to-back games against South Carolina and Ole Miss.
After playing elite-level defense for most of the season, Oklahoma fell apart against top-ranked Texas, suffering one of their worst losses in the Brent Venables era. With Oklahoma football trending downward as they continue their run in the SEC, linebacker Danny Stutsman revealed the team held a players-only meeting heading into their matchup with South Carolina on Saturday.
Oklahoma Football LB Danny Stutsman Talks UT Loss
According to Colton Smiley of The Oklahoman:
#Sooners linebacker Danny Stutsman told reporters Monday that players held a meeting to air everything out after the Texas loss. Here’s some of what he said about trying to bounce back.
It is what it is. That’s what we put on tape. That’s what we put on film. Obviously, we are going to be disappointed in that… We just really didn’t live up to the moment.
Right after something like that happens, it is very easy for guys to start blaming each other. There are a thousand excuses you can make, but there are only so many opportunities you’re going to have. I think right after that, we had a players meeting. All the guys got together. We really aired it out and got it all out there. We start a new week, a new mindset, a new opponent. We really flushed it. We Learned from it and just got better together as a team.
Stutsman, a first-team Big 12 honoree last season, did not beat around the bush when discussing Oklahoma football’s performance against the Texas Longhorns. Oklahoma suffered their worst loss of the season, getting more than doubled up on rushing yards while committing seven penalties and losing two fumbles.
Stutsman revealed that following the brutal loss, the team held a players-only meeting in which the Sooners are currently in the right mental headspace to push forward with their SEC schedule. Stutsman has struggled to have the same impact from the two previous seasons, tallying 46 tackles and four TFLs through six games. He has yet to record a sack.
