This season went differently than planned for Oklahoma football. In their first season competing in the hyper-competitive SEC, Oklahoma sputtered midway through the year, firing offensive coordinator Seth Littrell before finishing the regular season 6-6. With the six wins, Oklahoma will narrowly keep their 26-year-long bowl streak alive. On Monday, the Sooners signed their new offensive coordinator, poaching the play-caller from Washington State.
Next season, Oklahoma football will lean on offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, a position he has held the past two seasons with WSU. Due to his past happy tendencies and lack of experience, Oklahoma Sooners fans sat divided following the Arbuckle hiring.
Oklahoma Football Fans Question OC Hiring
According to On3 on Twitter:
BREAKING: Oklahoma has hired Washington State OC Ben Arbuckle as its next offensive coordinator,
@PeteNakos_ reports.
The Seth Litrell era with Oklahoma football was short-lived, with the offensive coordinator lasting just seven games before his dismissal. During his tenure, Oklahoma posted their worst offensive production since 1960, with neither quarterback Jackson Arnold nor Michael Hawkins finding success in the early portion of SEC play. Co-offensive coordinator Joe Jon Finley took over for Littrell, stabilizing the offense through the running game for the remainder of the season.
Yet, despite the strides made by the offense, Oklahoma will bring in Washington State OC Ben Arbuckle. He has spent the past two seasons with Washington State. In 2023, with now Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward, WSU scored 31.7 points per game, the 38th-best mark in the country. This season, Washington State scored 36.6 points per game, with quarterback John Mateer throwing for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns, and seven picks. However, with Washington State mainly a pass-happy offense, Oklahoma football fans remain split on the hiring:

I’m not 100% sold on this hire. I am tired of the air raid system. We will score a lot of points but the system is too vulnerable.
