Oklahoma football has a rich history, spanning 116 seasons of triumphs, from Bud Wilkinson and Billy Vessels to Danny Stutsman and Brent Venables. The Sooners have won 49 conference titles and six national championships, producing seven Heisman Trophy winners across nearly 12 decades. The team’s iconic crimson and cream uniforms have remained a constant throughout the years. Recently, the Sooners announced new alternate uniforms inspired by the 1950s, a decade during which Oklahoma won three titles.
According to the team’s official Twitter page, Oklahoma football will don a new alternate jersey this season. The Sooners famously debuted their alternate crimson jerseys with cream accents and borders in 2014.
Oklahoma Football: Drop Hype Video to Promote New Uniforms
The Oklahoma football team will don a new look in their September 7 matchup against the Houston Cougars early in the season. According to their official Twitter page, the now-SEC program will wear 1950s-inspired primary red uniforms against Houston during their second home game. The uniforms will feature white horizontal stripes on the sleeves, while the helmet shares the same white base and red stripe from the 1950s. “Down in Norman, Oklahoma, coach Bud Wilkinson’s Sooners were polishing up their Big 7 championship crown of ’51 as the ’52 season opens. Bud Wilkinson had an array of splintering Sooners. Speedy left half Billy Vessels was awarded the Heisman Trophy.”
“Our team has worked very hard in practice, and we are simply waiting until the game to see what kind of team we have.”
Per Soonersports, “Oklahoma’s 2024 alternate uniform is representative of the one worn by OU teams from 1946-1956.” The Sooners were a juggernaut during that era, winning three of their seven titles while finishing inside the AP Poll Top 25 each season.
Bud Wilkinson: Honored by Oklahoma Football
Oklahoma football will honor Hall of Fame head coach Bud Wilkinson with their 2024 alternate uniforms. Wilkinson, an assistant coach with Oklahoma in 1946, took over for his predecessor Jim Tatum the following season after the latter left to fill the vacant head coaching position with Maryland football. Wilkinson spent his entire 17-year college football head coaching career with the Sooners, amassing an incredible 145-29 record.
In Oklahoma’s third season under the tutelage of Wilkinson, the Sooners posted a perfect 11-0 record, concluding with a 35-0 Sugar Bowl victory over LSU. OU won their firfst of three titles with Wilkinson the following season despite a 10-1 record. Wilkinson’s best stretch came from 1954 to 1956, with the Sooners posting a 31-0 record and winning two titles. The 1956 Sooners allowed just 13 points across their final six games while leading the country with 33 points scored per contest.
