Ohio State will open its’ season on Sept. 3 against Notre Dame. The game will be broadcast on ESPN as College Gameday will be present that day. The game is set to start at 6:30 with the 2002 national championship team to be honored at halftime. It will be a good first test to see where Ohio State is at for the start of the season. Since the game is at home, Ohio State will have the advantage. Let’s dive more into this Ohio State vs Notre Dame preview!
Ohio State ended last season with eleven wins and two losses with a win in the Rose Bowl. Notre Dame also finished 11-2 with a loss in the Fiesta Bowl. Ohio State will be looking to make a run for the National Championship this year. Ohio State has not won the championship since the 2014 season. They have been close a number of times, but they fell short in the playoff in 2016 and 2019. The Buckeyes were in the championship in the 2020 season but lost to Alabama.
First year Coach and Quarterback vs. the Shoe
Ohio State vs. Notre Dame will be a great matchup for the beginning of the season. It does not look good for Notre Dame entering this game. The Irish have high expectations as well this season, but it may take a game to fully mesh together. This will be the head coach’s first year coaching with Brian Kelly leaving for LSU. The Irish also will have a first year starting quarterback with the last one having left for the NFL. To top all of that off, the game will be in the Horseshoe with 100,000 plus fans cheering. It will be very difficult to run an offense with that much noise in the stadium.
The Ohio State offense should score a lot of points and the defense should show improvement from last year. The offense returns C.J. Stroud who is a heisman candidate this year along with Jaxon Smith-Njigba. In order for this to be a blowout, the offense needs to score points and the defense needs to create sacks. They have to create a lot of negative plays and force three and outs. If this is done, Ohio State can blowout Notre Dame.
