The Ohio State football team enters this weekend as the fifth-ranked team in the AP Poll Top 25. The Ohio State Buckeyes, alongside the Texas Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs, are the only team heading into the final weekend of September to earn a first-place vote, combining for a stellar 10-0 record. However, unlike the other two top-tier programs, Ohio State has yet to face a ranked opponent and will not on Saturday against the 3-1 Michigan State Spartans.
The Buckeyes non-conference schedule consisted of three home games against the Akron Zips, Western Michigan Broncos, and the Marshall Thundering Herd, with neither team owning a record of .500 or better. Although many college football teams tend to take a lighter approach during the first few weeks of the season, former Michigan Wolverines Heisman Trophy Award winner and current ESPN college football analyst Desmond Howard mocked Ohio State football for their early season strength of schedule.
Desmond Howard Takes Aim at Ohio State Football
According to Desmond Howard through On3’s Twitter account:
So, pretty much, Ohio State took the whole month off… I’m just saying they haven’t played anybody. Week 5, and they have not played a Power Four team. That’s crazy… Ohio State, finally, welcome to the 2024 college football season up in East Lansing against Sparty.
Howard also indicated that Ohio State football is the only team in the AP Top 25 not to play a Power 5 opponent yet this season. Ohio State has outscored their opponents 157-to-20 this season, albeit the competition comes from the MAC and Sun Belt conferences. They will play their first Power 5 foe on Saturday, visiting the Michigan State Spartans in a conference tilt.
Howard’s comments about Ohio State football quickly drew the fanbase’s attention, with many pointing towards his alma mater’s weak non-conference schedules from the past few seasons. Meanwhile, others jumped on Howard, believing the commentator to have a bias against Ohio State:

Yeah, but he never said that for y’all. He actually praised how y’all played in those games.

Ain't no way a Michigan guy is talking about taking September off after how they've started the last 3 seasons…
— The Degenerate (@TheDegenWeekly) September 27, 2024
Didn't hear a peep from him last September when Michigan did the same?

Please show me where in the last 2 years you called out your Alma Mater for their lack luster OOC schedules? pic.twitter.com/gmn5ob4s0T
— Buckeye Rationalist (@BuckeyeRational) September 27, 2024
Michigan did the same thing last yr but just a good point.
Unless teams are penalized for not having a strong ooc no incentive to schedule one

I mean, he’s not wrong…
But how bad has Michigan looked against their schedule?😂
— NKY Bracket Guy (@BracketNky) September 27, 2024
This is like the typical SEC schedule. At least the B1G plays nine conference games, though.

Desmond “clown” Howard. Desmond Howard mocked Ohio State's non-conference schedule ahead of the Big Ten opener, saying they "took the whole month off."
