Ohio State started its season with a 52-6 win over Akron last week, and there is only so much you can take away from a win over a lesser opponent.
The Buckeyes transfer quarterback Will Howard looked great, and true freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was unbelievable in his debut, catching two touchdown passes.
Ohio State is looking like one of the best teams in the country, and for head coach Ryan Day, this is the season he needs to win big, or else he could be looking for a new job at season’s end.
Day made many changes this offseason. One of the biggest was hiring UCLA head coach Chip Kelly to call the offense, but another few changes were made that many people might not even know about.
Ohio State is big on tradition, and players used to wear suits before games and stay in a hotel on campus the night before home games, but all that changed this off-season.
Ohio State Changed Traditions
Instead of suits, players are now wearing team-provided warmups and staying in a hotel downtown instead of on campus.
These changes don’t seem like a big deal, but Day said they have lessened distractions around the players staying off campus. They also don’t have to worry about their suits and how they look right before the game.
It was always neat to see the Ohio State players dressed up for games like they were going to work, but if changing into warmups helps the team win, nobody will care what they wear and where they stay before a game.
Little changes like this could go a long way. It’s not going to make them win a title, but players could be more focused now that they do not have to worry about other things like wearing suits and staying on campus.
Seeing how these changes work when they play tougher opponents will be interesting. They will get that first major test when Iowa arrives in early October.
