Ohio State switched quarterbacks Kyle McCord to Kansas State transfer Will Howard this offseason. In mid-December, McCord entered his name into the transfer portal after leading the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record, but the only loss was to Michigan, which can’t happen.
McCord chose to play college football at Syracuse this season and has performed well in his first two games.

In McCord’s first two games in 2024, he has thrown for 735 yards, eight scores, and one interception with a QBR of 83.1, which is the 20th-best among all FBS quarterbacks.
Last week, Syracuse welcomed into 23rd ranked Georgia Tech, who knocked off Florida State two weeks before, and the former Buckeye quarterback put on a show throwing for 381 yards and four scores.
McCord’s decision to go to Syracuse was the best thing for him since he didn’t handle the pressure of being Ohio State’s quarterback well. Now, he can just relax at a school that isn’t known for football and whose fanbase doesn’t criticize every throw he makes.
Ohio State found a nice quarterback in Will Howard, and it looks like the Buckeyes and McCord benefited well from this split.
On Tuesday, McCord’s former head coach, Ryan Day, had a lot of praise for his former quarterback.

Ryan Day complimented Kyle McCord’s early success at Syracuse🍊
“I’ve only seen a few highlights, and it looks like he’s doing a great job… And so, you know, happy to see him doing well so far this season.”https://t.co/56zeQKFtZe pic.twitter.com/0toeuqWtgn

It’s nice to see Ryan Day praise his former quarterback, even though they both went in different directions this offseason. Day sure seems to be happy for McCord.
Many thought the split between Ohio State and McCord was a nasty one, but it seems to be the two parties just couldn’t work together, and McCord wasn’t going to be guaranteed a starting job, and he needed to find a place to start since he had one more year left of eligibility.
It would be interesting to see Ohio State meet Syracuse in the college football playoffs. Given how McCord has been playing and how bad the ACC is, there is a chance the Orange could be in the playoffs.
