Observations from Bears Chiefs game. While it can be difficult to make quality observations that mean anything in the first preseason game, there were a few. Over all I think it was a positive game for the Bears. Not because they won. A preseason win has about as much value as a fart in a wet paper bag. It was positive because some players that could have key roles this season showed us flashes. So just a few quick notes from the game.
Receiving core
It certainly appears there is a little depth at the Receiver position. I’m not saying you have a bunch of number one and two receivers. You may have a few guys that you are comfortable with being your 4th 5th and 6th receivers, and a few could turn into more. Dazz Newsome who I wrote an article on a few days ago, had been doing some good things in camp. He had a nice touchdown catch in the corner you have to feel good about. Tajae Sharp the 6-4 six year veteran had a couple of nice catches including the play of the game. A sick one handed snag a long sideline for 19 yards. What worries you about Sharp is how long he’s been in the league. You don’t expect him to finally become a star in his seventh year in the league. Dante Pettis had a solid game as well for the Bears hauling in a few catches. Good signs from a position the Bears are hurting at.
Return of the 85 Bears
Out of the starters on defense Brisker looked good, nearly getting a pick and Eddie Jackson was moving well. The Bears defense in the second half resembled the 85 team. Getting after the quarterback, creating turnovers. It was fun to watch but we didn’t learn much in the grand scheme of things. It will help a few guys who are trying to make the roster. If they end up being impact players during this season that means things have gone way off the rails.
Not so secret weapon
I wrote an article last week on Bears sixth round pick Tristan Ebnar who had a nice receiving touchdown out of the backfield. Something he did a lot in college. He also had a chance at a few kick returns. I called him the Bears secret weapon, but he’s starting to become not so secret. He maybe asked to step up sooner then expected if Montgomery is going to have injury issues.
Cairo stays on a roll
Kicking is one thing to always keep an eye on in preseason because there is no difference from the regular season for a kicker. Cairo Santos looked great as he has since he’s been a Bear. I’m glad they haven’t wasted a roster spot on a kicking competition.
