Odell Beckham, Jr. is a free agent for the second time in his nine year career. The Tennessee Titans are thin at wide receiver. Bobby Trees (Robert Woods) was a free agent wide receiver from the Rams who is coming off a torn ACL. Woods was traded to the Titans in the off season. OBJ is currently a free agent from the Rams recovering from a torn ACL he sustained during Super Bowl LVI. Could the Titans double up on wide receiver from the discount Rams bin? Beckham’s career has its ups and downs. The highlights will tell the tale of two different endeavors.
OBJ’s Early Career
Undoubtedly, Odell Beckham, Jr. was one of the best players at wide receiver earlier in his career. He was drafted 12th overall by the New York Giants in 2014. Over the 59 games he played with the Giants, mostly catching passes from two time Super Bowl champion quarterback Eli Manning, OBJ shined. Who could forget this!? He racked up 5,476 yards and scored 44 touchdowns with an average of 93 yards per game. He was selected to three consecutive pro bowls and won the offensive rookie of the year award.
OBJ’s Later Career…So Far
All good things come to an end as did OBJ’s time with the Giants. The Giants, honestly, got the better end of a deal involving a first and third round draft pick. Odell floundered in his two and a half seasons with the Browns before being cut after requesting a trade multiple times. His numbers sank to 1,586 receiving yards, only 7 touchdowns, and a mediocre 55 yards per game. His redemption came after clearing waivers and becoming a free agent for the first time in his career. The Rams picked him up and rode his reviving 305 yards and 5 touchdowns to a Super Bowl championship.
The proof exists. Odell Beckham, Jr. still has talent to showcase given the right team. The Tennessee Titans need veteran leadership in their wide receiver room. It will be mid season before Odell is able to return per last season’s injury. The pieces, however, are there waiting for him. Rob Moore, Tennessee’s receivers coach, used to coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Moore has roots in a tough SEC conference where Odell played (LSU) and a team (Arkansas) where rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks thrived in his college career. All aboard the OBJ train!
