Notre Dame football picked up their first win over the weekend 24-17 over Cal and avoided starting the year 0-3 which they haven’t done since 2007. Despite winning, Notre Dame still has many question marks as a team, and nothing proved that more than Tommy Rees screaming on the phone at Freshman Quarterback Drew Pyne.
Tommy Rees Yelling at Drew Pyne
If you have seen the clip you can pretty easily read what Rees is yelling. Rees, one of the best quarterbacks in school history, showed shades of his former coach Brian Kelly with a display that would rival some of Kelly’s best meltdowns. Understanding that college football is a business and the job of the Offensive Coordinator is to make sure everyone of the 11 men on the field are playing up to his standards it seems that Rees may have been out of line when losing his cool.
Pyne had a good day. Nothing great about his performance but made all the throws he needed to and only turned the ball over once after a fumbled snap to start the second quarter. Pyne would finish the day with 150 yards and two touchdowns. That performance is nothing more than being a game manager. That’s all Pyne did, tried his best to make sure his team was always in a position to win the game. He made the throws he needed to when he was asked to do so.
Starting at the Top
Notre Dame’s frustrations seem to start at the top and trickle their way down. Head Coach Marcus Freeman seemed to be pressing as he was winless as the head coach of the Fighting Irish, 0-3. Now with their offensive trouble to start the season we are seeing OC Tommy Rees start to crack as well. Rees who was one of the household names for the Irish from 2010-2013 seems to be biting off more than he can chew. Understanding that the offense starts with the Quarterback, many of the Irish’s receivers seemed to lack concentration on Saturday and dropped many catchable balls. They do not have great skill at the wide receiver position and Rees seems inept to understand that.
As anyone with eyes can see, Notre Dame’s offense is not good, as a matter of fact they are ranked 114 in the country. Pyne, as stated before, didn’t play badly, he kept it together so there is no need to chew out your backup Quarterback. Pyne only attempted three passes over ten yards and completed two of them. Tommy Rees is clearly taking out his frustrations and lack of competence for the situation out on a backup. It’s understandable why Rees is yelling to “Do your F-ing job” but Rees, if he is such a great offensive mind to be calling plays for Notre Dame, should realize that he needs to do his job better. It Should be Marcus Freeman yelling at Tommy Rees to do his job.
