The College Football Playoff conversation surrounding Notre Dame took a sharp turn, with analysts splitting on whether the Fighting Irish deserve their current standing.

Fox Sports analyst Chris Fallica pointed out what he considers a glaring weakness in the Irish resume: three of their seven wins came against teams sitting in last place in their respective conference.

Boston College, Purdue, and Arkansas combine for an 0-18 record in conference play and just 5-24 overall, with only two of those five wins coming against FBS opponents. The observation raises some questions about the quality of Notre Dame’s wins as the selection committee prepares to make some tough decisions over the coming weeks:

“Of Notre Dame’s seven wins, three have come against the last place teams in the ACC, Big Ten and SEC – Boston College, Purdue and Arkansas – teams that are a combined 0-18 in league play and 5-24 overall (only two of those five wins game against an FBS team).

Sports analyst Scott Gulbransen countered with another view, saying that taking care of inferior opponents decisively is what the elite programs do. He cited Notre Dame’s 34-24 win over then-ranked USC, along with strong outings against Boise State and Navy.

The Irish defense has been particularly stout in those wins, limiting opponents and controlling games from start to finish. And Gulbransen added that an 8-2 record with dominant performances across the board should lock the Irish into a playoff field, despite concerns about strength of schedule:

“Sure, ND beat some duds (BC, Purdue, ARK)—but that is what elite teams do. Meanwhile, they smoked #20 USC 34-24, shut down Boise St & Navy, and nearly upset MIA/TAMU. 8-2 w/ blowouts across the board? CFP lock. Critics: Check the full tape.”

Notre Dame sits at 7-2 following their November 9 win over Navy, having bounced back from early losses to Miami and Texas A&M. Both defeats came on the road against ranked opponents in games decided by narrow margins.

Head coach Marcus Freeman has led his team through seven consecutive victories since that 0-2 start, building momentum at precisely the right time. The Irish rank 10th in the first College Football Playoff rankings released.
