The Notre Dame Fighting Irish went 11-1 during the college football regular season. They were the seventh seed and defeated the Indiana Hoosiers, the Georgia Bulldogs, and the Penn State Nittany Lions in the playoffs before losing to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the National Championship Game.

Riley Leonard’s backup quarterback, Steve Angeli, is ready to take over the reins for the 2025 college football season. Angeli saw minimal action during the 2024 season. He completed 66.7% of his passes for 268 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Angeli is 6’2″ and weighs 205 lbs.
Greg McElroy Makes Bold Prediction About Notre Dame Fighting Irish Quarterback Steve Angeli

McElroy was on his podcast talking about the Fighting Irish entering the 2025 college football season. He was talking about Angeli potentially being the starting quarterback for Notre Dame. The former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback thinks that Angeli could be special next season for the Irish. He said,
“I’ve seen Steve Angeli thrust into action against a ferocious pass rush in Penn State and one of the best defenses in the country. I saw Steve Angeli go into the lineup and just methodically right down the field. Accurately carving up a defense. Who’s to say Steve Angeli’s ceiling, when the real lights are on, isn’t outrageously high? “…What if, when we fast forward to this year, Steve Angeli has some awakening? And all of a sudden, he’s the second coming of Joe Burrow.”
This is a very bold prediction for Notre Dame’s quarterback. When Burrow won the Heisman with LSU during the 2019 season, he completed 76.3% of his passes for 5,671 yards, 60 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Those stats led him to being the number one overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
McElroy also said about Angeli,
“Joe Burrow at Ohio State was just a guy. In his first year at LSU, he was just a guy. Well, Steve Angeli to this point of his career, just a guy. Maybe there’s another level in there that we just don’t know about.”
Angeli had to wait his turn with Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish will have high expectations under head coach Marcus Freeman next college football season. If Notre Dame wants to reach another level in 2025, Angeli will need to play well, but it is a far stretch to say he will be the next Burrow.
