The North Carolina Tar Heels are 3-1 to start the college football season, but North Carolina lost to the James Madison Dukes at home on Saturday 70-50. North Carolina this week is preparing for a road rivalry matchup with the Duke Blue Devils.
Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown is 73 yards old. After the loss against James Madison, he took the loss hard and he wondered if he needed to step aside because the players weren’t getting the necessary leadership from him.
North Carolina Tar Heels Head Coach Mack Brown Feels “Overwhelming Support” From His Players
Brown had “overwhelming” support from his players. Mack Brown told David Hale of ESPN:
“I shouldn’t have put that pressure on them, so I’m disappointed in me. I love my job, I love these kids, and I love this place. That’s why I hate losing so much.”
The good news for the Tar Heels is that they did not start ACC Conference play yet. The ACC Conference feels wide open this season. Brown has had success in the past. Maybe he just had a major overreaction to the James Madison Dukes’ loss this past weekend.
Brown Learns From the Best
Mack Brown always had a quote from Hall of Fame Coach Tom Landry which said:
“You learn from losses.”
Brown has already been hard on himself when losing football games. He also added to Hale:
“You do. but I usually have to start learning on Monday or Tuesday.”
This was about learning from losses. The good news is that the Tar Heels could wipe the bad taste out of their mouths if they can beat the Duke Blue Devils on the road this weekend in a huge ACC Matchup. North Carolina has faced adversity several times this season.
It will not be the last time they will face adversity either. They gave up 53 points in the first half against the James Madison Dukes. They only held them to 17 points in the second half and North Carolina scored 29 points in the second half.
Jacobly Criswell completed 28-of-45 passes for 475 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions against James Madison. He will need to cut down the turnovers against the Duke Blue Devils. Mack Brown and the Tar Heels need to turn the corner. If Brown wants to step aside from coaching this team, he should wait until the end of the season to do so.
