The Michigan Wolverines have suffered a tough loss to a very strong visiting team in the #3 Texas Longhorns and quarterback Quinn Ewers.
Ewers looked fantastic against the Wolverines, cutting through the defense and finding the open route consistently. Even when feeling pressure or an incoming hit, Ewers consistently found the open space and delivered a strike to his intended target. While the Wolverines defense struggled against the Longhorns, the offense truly could not get anything started against a stout Texas defense.
Michigan Wolverines Offense Stalls Against Tough Texas Longhorns Defense
The Michigan Wolverines have lost to the Texas Longhorns in epic proportion after the visiting Longhorns picked their team apart. The defense realistically played a solid game despite the score, but were kept on the field for far too long. The offense, however, failed to show much of anything and desperately needs to find an identity moving forward.
The Michigan Wolverines have long been known for their powerful rush offense, but have not been able to establish that through two games. The power and tenacity their rushing offense once had does not seem to be there anymore, and perhaps it is due to the departure of running back Blake Corus. Regardless, Michigan cannot get anything going on the ground which in turns makes teams focus on sitting back in coverage.
Through the air, Michigan truly struggled as quarterback Davis Warren was exposed against the Longhorns. Texas has a defense riddled with experienced four and five star recruits who have played at a high level for quite some time. The former walk-on Warren split reps all preseason and throughout camp, and was cast into the starting position without developing any first-team chemistry.
The lack of reps and experience from Warren is evident, as he throws interceptions in areas where his receiver is not and misses the open man often. Warren is not on the same page as his receivers and without a run game to generate any sort of rhythm, the offense becomes truly stagnant.
What Went Wrong For the Michigan Football Team Against Texas?
The big issues for the Michigan football team came on the offensive side of the ball, where quarterback Davis Warren truly struggled. Warren did not look prepared to play against a defense as strong as the Longhorns and also did not receive help from his teammates. Michigan had a solid drive going at one point and then top receiving target, tight end Colston Loveland, fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Longhorns.
Warren completed a handful of passes and also turned the ball over as well with two ugly interceptions. The Wolverines staff tried to implement quarterback Alex Orji as a rusher once again and the Texas defense was more than prepared each time. Running back Donovan Edwards also had a hard time rushing the ball against the Longhorns defense.
Warren shared reps all preseason and has not had the chance to truly start and receive those reps since his high school career. The quarterback struggled to stay on the same page as his receivers and really showed his lack of experience at this high of a level. Michigan may have to start Orji or even another quarterback in the room moving forward as Warren clearly needs more development time.
The Michigan Wolverines had not been handled like this in a football game in quite sometime since their postseason lost to the Georgia Bulldogs years ago. Michigan needs to figure out the identity of their offense and stick to one playing style moving forward to be competitive. The switch between packages and play style between quarterbacks is too drastic and exposes the Wolverines offense.
