The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Kansas City went into Buffalo with a perfect 9-0 record, and this looked to be one of the last teams on their schedule that could change that. The Bills defense set the tone early picking off Patrick Mahomes the second play from scrimmage. Just a few plays later and James Cook was running in for a Buffalo touchdown, his first of two on the day.
The Kansas City offense hasn’t been what we are accustomed to seeing this season. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has only thrown for 2,404 yards and 15 touchdowns, his 11 interceptions stand out most though. The Chiefs have been missing key starters on the offensive side of the ball, Isiah Pacheco and Rashee Rice both suffering lower-body injuries earlier in the season.
Chiefs Lose First Game of the Year
In one of the most anticipated games of the year, renewing the Mahomes-Allen rivalry, the Chiefs would struggle to get much going on offense consistently. Mahomes would only be able to pass for 196 yards, he would throw three touchdown passes but also be picked off twice. Star tight end Travis Kelce would essentially be a non-factor in this game. Kelce would only have two catches for a total of eight yards in the contest.
On the other hand, Buffalo QB Josh Allen carried his team to victory. The former Wyoming quarterback would throw for 262 yards and a touchdown, also being picked off once. The key though was Allen’s running ability, he would lead the Bills in rushing with 55 yards. 26 of those yards would come on the game sealing touchdown run in the fourth quarter, securing the Bills 30-21 victory.
Why This Could Be A Good Thing For KC
Coming into this game with their perfect 9-0 record, talks of a perfect season were circulating through the media. Already on the quest to do what’s never been done before, winning three Super Bowls back-to-back-to-back. The Chiefs needed a reminder they could be beat, dating back to last year they had won 15 games in a row. Sometimes it’s easy to forget if you don’t bring it every Sunday, you can be beat by anyone. Kansas City almost found that out last week against Denver.
The Kansas City quarterback was asked about taking their first loss on the year, and their perfect season being no more. Mahomes would say, “The undefeated thing was cool, but that’s not our ultimate goal.” He would continue, “We feel like we can play better, so we will get back to work and try to use it as a spark so that we can be a better football team in the end.”
On the note of the first loss being a good thing for the team, Mahomes would also tell reporters after the game, “I’m hoping that losing is a benefit. I’m not going to say I or we relaxed, but at the same time, I feel like we were just coming away with these wins at the end of the game.” The star QB would then continue, “I think it’s going to spark us to have more urgency, especially with the offense, and that comes from me and turning the ball over on the first drive. It’s something you can’t do in big games like this.”
If the Kansas City quarterback is right and this loss can be used as fuel to spark the Chiefs offense, the rest of the NFL needs to worry. Already touting one of the best defenses in the league, if their offense can manage to get going and even come close to resembling the past Kansas City offenses, they might not lose again this year.
