The Houston Texans have built what has the potential to be one of the most electrifying, dynamic, and deepest receiving corps in the league this offseason, thanks in part to a blockbuster trade for playmaker Stefon Diggs, but, someone is likely to be the odd-man out. As roster cuts loom, NFL trade rumors gain steam.
Following Nico Collins’ continued ascension into becoming one of the game’s most consistently dominant receivers, and Tank Dell’s emergence as a potentially game-altering weapon during an injury-shortened rookie campaign in 2023,
Houston’s aggressiveness at wide receiver could create the opportunity for a receiver-needy franchise to add a young player with upside at the position ahead of the 2024 season kicking off.
Could the Houston Texans Trade John Metchie?
As the deadline for teams to trim the roster to 53 players looms on Tuesday, August 27, one NFL insider suggests the Houston Texans have been receiving significant interest in wide receiver John Metchie.
“Sources: Multiple teams have reached out to the Texans to see if WR John Metchie III would be available in trade due to the plethora of receivers on their roster,” Schultz posted on this Threads account Monday. “It’s unclear if Houston would move him, but several team are keeping a close eye.
“The former 2nd-round pick out of Alabama had 10 catches for 100 yards and a TD in the preseason.”
There could be several teams around the league looking for a veteran No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver to help their quarterback where Metchie could make some sense.
At 6-feet and 195 pounds, Metchie caught 16 passes for 158 yards in his first NFL season in 2023.
“Metchie shined against the Giants last week,” veteran NFL reporter Mike Tanier wrote of Metchie. “With six catches for 58 yards and one touchdown. He looked a lot like the receiver who shined opposite Jameson Williams and caught passes from Mac Jones and Bryce Young at Alabama three years ago.
Being over a year removed from cancer treatment has helped Metchie’s game, the seasoned columnist writes, reeling at the obviousness and absurdity of his own sentence. “You go through so long with treatment for so long and even though you are done you are not really done,” Metchie said after Saturday’s game, per longtime Texans reporter Aaron Wilson. “You have to give it some time for your body to flush it out and for you to able to keep building and just flush it out. I kind of expected it would be better.”
For Houston, though, the biggest hurdle could be teams around the league believing the Texans would release Metchie because of the crowded wide receiver room, making it less palatable to offer an asset in a trade to acquire him.
