When the Houston Texans selected C.J. Stroud as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, we all had a good idea that the 21-year-old was stepping into the role of Houston’s cornerstone quarterback for the future. As it turns out, however, the Texans have yet to decide if the young QB is ready to take on this massive responsibility. As of right now, Houston’s coaching staff has not handed over the QB1 reins to Stroud ahead of the new season.
C.J. Stroud Unfazed by QB1 Race in Houston
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his role in his rookie season, Stroud remains unbothered. The former Ohio State superstar knows that the decision is out of his hands and that at this point, all he can do is keep his head down and keep putting the work in:
“I ain’t tripping. Just do what’s on my plate. I’m not worried about anybody else’s plate. I got to focus on what we got going on in this locker room,” Stroud said, via DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN. “And just getting better every day. It’s not about any of that stuff. It’s about competing every day and just getting better. That’s not my job. My job is to go out there and play. I got the fun stuff to do.”
One thing you cannot fault Stroud for is a lack of confidence. This young man knows what he’s capable of and he’s willing to wait for his shot. Be that as it may, there’s no denying that the 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback is hoping that this comes sooner rather than later.
DeMeco Ryans Keeping Mum on QB1 Plan Ahead of Season
At the moment, Stroud’s main competition for the QB1 role in Houston is incoming third-year stud Davis Mills, who has been the Texans’ starting quarterback over the past two seasons.
For his part, head coach DeMeco Ryans has refused to give us any hints regarding the QB1 race in Houston:
“In everybody’s case, we’ll see who earns what, and you’ll see our starters in Baltimore,” Ryans said.
Ryans isn’t giving us anything here. The Texans kick off their campaign with a Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on September 10th, and apparently, it’s only by then that we’ll learn whether or not C.J. Stroud will be in the starting lineup or not.
