Brittney Griner emotional plea before the verdict
“I never meant to hurt anybody, I never meant to put in jeopardy the Russian population, I never meant to break any laws here. According to CNN, I made an honest mistake and hoped that in your ruling, it doesn’t end my life here.
I know everybody keeps talking about political pawn and politics, but I hope that that is far from this courtroom. Want to say again that I had no intent on breaking any Russian laws. I had no intent, I did not conspire or plan to commit this crime.”
Dawn Staley reacts to Griner’s verdict
After the ruling was rendered, Staley tweeted, “We will not stop advocating for you release. Hold on to God unchanging hand. We love you, BG.”
Staley recently coached Griner as a member of the 2020 Team USA Women’s basketball team, which won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Phoenix Mercury also released a statement after verdict.
“We are inspired every day by BG’s strength and we are steadfastly committed to keeping her top-of-mind publicly until she is safely back on American soil, the Mercury said the press release.
