Shane Tamura is said to have driven himself to NYC on Monday. Surveillance footage showed him exiting a black BMW wearing body armor and carrying a rifle before he entered the lobby of the building and immediately targeted NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was working a paid gig for one of the offices.
He then shot a female civilian who tried hiding behind a pillar, then went for a security guard near the elevators. Two employees, one from Blackstone and another from the NFL offices, were also shot.
The National Football League staffer was the only survivor but remains in critical condition.
A three-page suicide note was found in the shooter’s pocket, in which he appeared to blame the NFL for his condition, having apparently believed he was suffering from CTE.
He also made mention of former NFL player Terry Long, who was diagnosed with the disease after he killed himself in 2005.
“Terry Long football gave me CTE, and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze. You can’t go against the NFL; they’ll squash you,” it read. “Study my brain, please. I’m sorry. Tell Rick I’m sorry for everything.”
The NYPD and FBI are investigating how someone in Tamura’s condition was able to obtain a concealed carry permit.
