And even if their balance beam final wasn’t what they expected, NFL icon Tom Brady was still impressed with the two during their performance in Paris.
The 2024 Olympic balance beam final in Paris was marked by an unusual tension between the athletes and the audience. Biles and Suni Lee, two of the top American gymnasts, expressed their discomfort with the crowd’s behavior during the event.
According to Biles’ coach, Cecile Landi, the crowd was generally “great,” but they frequently tried to “shush” the athletes, even as they were cheering each other on. This unexpected response from the audience created an “awkward” and “weird” atmosphere, according to the gymnasts.
Biles and Lee explained that gymnasts usually thrive in noisier environments, as it helps them stay focused on their routines. The silence in the Bercy Arena, however, added to the pressure of performing on the treacherous balance beam. Lee described the “tension in the room” and said the crowd’s shushing made the experience unpleasant.
The athletes had even requested that the organizers provide some background music or noise to help create a more familiar and supportive atmosphere. Despite the challenges, Italy’s Manila Esposito and Alice D’Amato were able to claim the first-ever Olympic balance beam medals for their country, suggesting that even in the face of an eerie silence, the gymnasts’ determination and skill could shine through.

The two American gymnasts boast a total of seven medals between them. Jonathan Owens’ wife has three gold medals and one silver, while Lee won one gold and two bronze medals in Paris. Both athletes will go home to the United States with a more accomplished record than before they left the country.
Even with all the doubters and critics, Both Biles and Lee ended up being triumphant on the global stage. As a result, they received a towering endorsement from no other than the GOAT of football himself.
