Just recently, former New England Patriots superstar Tom Brady dropped a scathing take about the current crop of quarterbacks playing in the NFL today. This prompted New York Giants icon Phil Simms to answer the GOAT’s thoughts on the matter.
The former Patriots star has expressed concerns about the current state of quarterback development in the league. He believes the NFL has dumbed the game down in order to allow rookie quarterbacks to play immediately, which he sees as a detriment to their long-term growth and the overall quality of the game.
Brady, who had the luxury of learning behind veteran Drew Bledsoe before taking over as the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots, argues that modern quarterbacks are not afforded the same opportunity. With teams under pressure to win right away and the salary cap advantages of having a rookie-contract quarterback, there is a push to get young signal-callers on the field as soon as possible.
However, Brady believes this approach is flawed, as it deprives these young players of the valuable time and coaching they need to truly develop their skills. He points to his own experience at the University of Michigan, where he had five years to learn the fundamentals of the position and adapt to the demands of playing at the highest level.
Brady’s concerns highlight the delicate balance between the pressures of the modern NFL and the long-term development of quarterback talent. As the league continues to evolve, the seven-time Super Bowl champion’s perspective offers a valuable insight into the challenges facing teams and players in this crucial position.
Former NFL Star Phil Simms Answers Tom Brady’s Criticism of Young NFL Quarterbacks
Brady’s take on today’s quarterbacks has drawn up a lot of reactions. Among those who have shared their thoughts is former Giants quarterback Phil Simms, as seen in a video shared by Bleav on X.
“ I heard the Tom Brady comments, and all that, I disagree that you’re just throwing them into this .”@PhilSimmsQB on young quarterbacks starting on the Simms Complete podcast.

Simms argued that these young quarterbacks are starting because they are the most talented options on their teams, not because they are being forced into the role. He also pointed out that the evolution of college football, with more pass-focused offenses, has better prepared these quarterbacks for the NFL. He believed the increased number of throws they get in college has made the transition easier.
In any case, the results of this era’s quarterback development program will be continually seen in the years to come. The upcoming season will prove which argument holds more water, either that of Brady or of Simms.
