Even though he has remained a free agent at this point in time, NFL quarterback Ryan Tannehill‘s stock rose up across the league. Despite the lack of a team signing him, there’s sufficient belief and reason that he won’t be before the season starts.
Tannehill first played college football at Texas A&M University, initially as a wide receiver before transitioning to the quarterback position. He was selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.
The quarterback spent his first seven seasons as the Dolphins’ primary starter before being traded to the Tennessee Titans in 2019. Initially serving as a backup, he became the starter midway through the 2019 season and led the team to the AFC Championship Game. He was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year and selected to the Pro Bowl in 2019. Over the next two seasons, he helped the Titans clinch consecutive division titles.
Tannehill has amassed impressive career statistics, including over 34,000 passing yards and 216 touchdown passes. He has set several franchise records for both the Dolphins and Titans. His combination of arm strength, accuracy, and mobility has made him a valuable asset for his teams. As a free agent in 2024, he continues to be a highly sought-after quarterback in the NFL.
The Main Reason Why NFL Quarterback Ryan Tannehill Won Despite Free Agency
At this point in time, Tannehill still remains unsigned by any NFL team. According to an article written by Alex Kay for Bleacher Report, that may soon change.
“Without needing to appear in a preseason game or even show up at a training camp, veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill saw a sizable boost to his stock this past week. The main reason behind this was a slew of underwhelming showings from backup QBs around the league,” Kay wrote.
“Due to these disappointing preseason showings, teams may be more willing to shell out some cash to land a steady hand like Tannehill. His presence could bolster a quarterback room before training camp concludes and help a squad feel more comfortable about its chances to remain afloat if a starting passer goes down.
While the 2019 Pro Bowler hasn’t been the most available player over the last two seasons—he has made just 20 starts since the beginning of the 2022 campaign due to injury and ineffectiveness—he’s, arguably, the most talented proven veteran still on the open market,” Kay added.
Just recently, Tannehill said he is open to a new NFL contract, but he is waiting for the right situation after his five-year tenure with the Titans. The 35-year-old is not interested in just adding more years to his career; he also wants to join a team where he feels comfortable and can contribute effectively.
While it may be hard to get the quarterback back to his prime, having him will ensure a veteran can steady the ship as a backup. In any case, a lot of people will be watching out where he’ll play for next.
