Over a year ago, former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre sued former NFL star Pat McAfee over comments he made about stealing from poor people in Mississippi. While the charges were eventually dropped, it’s still a topic that has garnered attention, especially when the sports analyst referenced it recently.
Back in 2023, Favre withdrew his defamation lawsuit against McAfee over comments he made on his podcast. The state of Mississippi sued the former Packers star and others as part of a civil suit seeking to recoup millions in misspent welfare funds.
While Favre has not been criminally charged in the case, a 2020 state audit found that tens of millions of dollars from the state’s welfare program were improperly used, including $1.1 million paid to Favre for a public service announcement campaign.
Favre has denied knowing the money he received was welfare money, stating he was being unjustly smeared in the media. However, he has since repaid $1.1 million to the state.
In a statement, McAfee said his comments were based solely on public information and allegations, and that he respects Favre’s football career. Favre also responded on Twitter, saying he is happy that they have settled this litigation and that they both would much rather talk about football after McAfee issued an apology via an episode of his show.
