Next year’s offseason will surely have a lot of players move to other NFL teams in a bid to become better. As it stands, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins is projected to be one of the major pieces that will stand out from the rest.
In the latest power rankings, the Atlanta Falcons find themselves at a critical juncture in the season, sitting at 13th overall. After a bye week, the Falcons are poised to make a strong push as they aim for a playoff spot. With a record of 6-5, they remain in contention for the NFC South title, a division that has shown inconsistency among its teams.
The Falcons have showcased flashes of potential, but their performance has been marked by ups and downs. Quarterback Desmond Ridder has shown growth, contributing significantly to the offense, but the team must find more consistency to solidify their playoff aspirations. The combination of a solid ground game, led by running back Bijan Robinson, and a capable receiving corps can keep them competitive in upcoming games.
Defensively, Atlanta has also demonstrated resilience, with key players stepping up when needed. The unit has had its moments, but they will need to tighten up against high-powered offenses as the season progresses. The upcoming schedule presents opportunities for the Falcons to assert themselves and prove they belong among the playoff contenders.
NFL Analysis Names Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins as 2025 Offseason Major Trade Piece
If things don’t go well in Atlanta, there’s a chance Cousins will be dangled as a trade piece to other NFL teams. This is explained more in detail by Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon.
Atlanta made the biggest splash in free agency last offseason, adding Kirk Cousins on a four-year, $180 million contract. However, the Falcons selected Penix one month later. They clearly plan on having him take control of the team at some point, which typically happens in short order with top-10 picks.
The bright side for Atlanta is that it currently stands atop the NFC South with a playoff bid looking likely. In such a bad division—one that doesn’t project to improve much by 2025—why rush to make changes?
On the other hand, why be scared of unleashing Penix if the staff believes he’s ready? Cousins has a $40 million cap number next season, but he’s still effective enough to have a legitimate trade market.
This could be one of the offseason’s more intriguing storylines if the Falcons are comfortable proceeding with the young backup over the veteran.
Cousins has emerged as an intriguing trade candidate as the 2025 offseason approaches. With rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. expected to take over, his $40 million cap hit could make him expendable.
While he has performed well this season, the Falcons might consider moving him to free up cap space and invest in a younger core. As teams focus on rebuilding, Cousins could attract serious interest, making this a pivotal offseason for both him and the Falcons. His future remains uncertain, but significant opportunities await.

Several things….
1) Desmond Ridder is no longer on the team.
2) Kirk’s first two years are fully guaranteed so cutting him is NOT gonna save any cap money.
3) The Falcons already tried to go younger….it didn’t go well which is why they aggressively went after Kirk.
4) There is no guarantee that Penix is any good. The Falcons are sure not gonna get rid their proven veteran over a rookie / 1st year player with a significant injury history whose had no playing time.
5) As long a Kirk is playing well (which he will), he is not going anywhere.
