NFL head coach Doug Pederson is reportedly going to be let go after an abysmal start to the season. The Jacksonville Jaguars are now 2-9 after getting demolished by the Detroit Lions 52-6 on Sunday, and it was an embarrassing game, to say the least. While the entire season has been a failure of great proportions for the Jaguars, this game seemed like the final nail in the coffin for Pederson.
There were numerous reports before the game, that a firing would happen soon if the team lost in brutal fashion, and now that they did reporters asked Pederson if he thinks he will be in Jacksonville going forward.
Doug Pederson Asked If He Thinks He’s Getting Fired
The Jaguars are in possession of the worst record in the NFL, and they would get the top overall draft pick for this upcoming season if the season ended today. There were multiple reports heading into this game that Pederson’s job was on the line, and the team fell flat.
“Heard from a couple people…the owner prefers to wait to make a decision after the season, but if they get blown out this weekend (vs. the Detroit #Lions) change is possibly coming,” said CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson prior to kickoff.
Per NFL.com: The Jaguars, mired in a miserable rut after losing four of their last five games, might be looking at another regime change for 2025, and sources say a dramatic move could come as soon as this week, pending the results of Sunday’s game against the Lions.
With all of these reports coming out, the media asked the head coach after their brutal loss if he thinks that he would be back after the team’s bye week, and how he feels about his own job security:
“I can’t control that. Listen, I’ve been around this league a long time. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen obviously. But at the same time, I have a job to do,” Pederson said.
This is a solid comment from Pederson given the situation, and it is quite crazy that this team has fallen so far off after a lot of productive football in the beginning of Pedersn’s time with the team. However, it seems that his time with the Jaguars is coming to a close very soon. The team has seemingly given up on him and without their starting quarterback, it will be surprising to see them win any more games this year.
Pederson should be fine with finding another job, as he is a Super Bowl champion. But after this awful season, it may be difficult to get a head coaching job with a team in 2025.
There are now many growing reports that Bill Belichick will be the one to take over in Jacksonville in 2025:
“Now, what about the guy who put together the best team ever assembled — general manager Trent Baalke? I’ve talked to several people throughout the league and there’s a belief in some circles he could potentially survive into next year as part of a package deal that would reunite him with someone he worked with back in 1998 and 1999 with the New York Jets. That coach is available, he’s won a few Super Bowls. His name is Bill Belichick.”
If Bill comes in, this team would look very different in 2025, but with these growing reports coming out, it is almost certain that Pederson will be gone as early as this week, and at the latest, at the end of this season.
