Former NFL head coach Jack Del Rio is walking away from coaching after being arrested. Before the arrest, Del Rio was working on the Wisconsin Badgers football program, but he has now officially resigned following the arrest.
Jack Del Rio Resigning Following DUI Arrest

Del Rio had a long career in the NFL before heading to college football at 61 years old. He joined the Badgers staff in 2024 as the senior advisor to the head coach.
He was a former linebacker in the league and spent most of his coaching career in the NFL working for the Jacksonville Jaguars as a head coach from 2003-11, and then went on to work for the Raiders for three seasons. After he was demoted from head coach, he worked as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders for a few years before he was let go.
Del Rio was reportedly arrested on Friday for driving under the influence and he crashed into a street sign and fence:
“Wisconsin staff member Jack Del Rio, the former NFL coach, was arrested early Friday for operating while intoxicated after a car he was driving hit a street sign and broke a fence. He “showed signs of impairment,” per Madison police. No injuries were reported,” ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported on Monday afternoon.
Wisconsin has released a short statement noting that they take these things very seriously, and that is probably why he is no longer with the team already. Del Rio is going to resign following this arrest per ESPN:
“We take matters like this very seriously and we are continuing to gather information,” Wisconsin said in a statement.
Del Rio “showed signs of impairment” and admitted to driving the vehicle. He was arrested for first-time OWI and released.
“He’s going to move forward and he’s going to resign and move on,” Fickell said Monday. “But it’s a tough situation. Decisions that all of us have to be able to take full responsibility for. So that’s what Jack will do, and we’ll continue to move forward.”
Hopefully, Del Rio will move on from this properly and can manage to get his life back in order. Drinking and driving is extremely dangerous and Del Rio is facing the repercussions. Thankfully there were no injuries reported.
