One NFL player actually got 3 separate fines this week from the league and all of them for considerable amounts. Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson received a lot of mail from the NFL office this past week, and when looking around the league at these fines and suspensions, it’s getting a bit ridiculous.
Eagles Star Safety Hit with 3 Fines From NFL This Week
Per Sports Illustrated’s Saints News Network, Gerndern Johnson was fined for multiple plays against New Orleans that led to three separate fines Including:
- Unnecessary Roughness (late hit) $11,255
- Unsportsmanlike Conduct (taunting) $16,883
- Unsportsmanlike Conduct (taunting) $16,883
For those that are counting, that’s roughly $45,000 in penalty marks and this is the second straight game that the safety has been taxed by the NFL. The league is clearly trying to take away every single type of hard hit that made many fans fall in love with the game.
When you take away the intensity from the sport you take away the aura as well, and even with all of this player safety we are seeing tons and tons of players getting injured every week. Last season, we saw more than half the starting quarterbacks go down, and this year is looking similar regarding star injuries.
But, Gardener Johnson says that he won’t change his play style so he may continue to get taxed each game for his play style.
Last week he was penalized for taunting, and almost got another penalty when his helmet came off on a monster play on fourth down. Johnson was clearly hyped up for the Saints, as they are his former team, and before the game, he stated:
“They ain’t no contenders. They’re pretenders.”
That sparked some more fire from their NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys, as their star defender Micah Parsons had this to say:
I don’t know who C.J. Gardner [Johnson] thinks he is. I think Derek Carr has validated himself way before C.J. has ever done… Derek Carr has been a Pro-Bowl quarterback before. Derek Carr has always been a pretty damn good quarterback.
The Eagles will be without some of their stars for this week’s big-time revenge matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But it is a bit strange to see the NFL attempt to get rid of any type of hard-hitting that goes on, and yet players are getting more injured than ever…
