The NFL’s most popular tight end Travis Kelce announced with superstar Adam Sandler that he will be in the new Happy Gilmore movie alongside Sandler. Sandler himself revealed this as well in a late talk show interview where he was candid about Travis and how they became fast friends:
“He’s a very nice guy,” Sandler said of Kelce. “You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud, and he’s so funny.”
Now, many fans are taking to social media expressing mixed reactions to the breaking news.
Travis Kelce Lands Huge Movie Role With Adam Sandler
As reported on Gridiron previously, and as Adam Wells of Bleacher Report wrote:
As Travis Kelce gets set to play his 12th NFL season with the Kansas City Chiefs, he is also busy lining up jobs off the football field.
On Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (starts at 1:00 mark), Adam Sandler revealed Kelce will “be part” of the upcoming Happy Gilmore sequel.
Netflix announced in May that it had greenlit a sequel to the 1996 golf comedy. Sandler told Fallon they are getting ready to start production in a couple of weeks in New Jersey.
A Happy Gilmore sequel has been teased by Sandler for several years. There were rumblings about Kelce being part of the new movie when he was spotted in Los Angeles wearing a Happy Gilmore hat.
It’s fairly common for athletes and celebrities to have supporting roles and cameos in Sandler movies. The original Happy Gilmore featured Lee Trevino, Verne Lundquist and Bob Barker. Lawrence Taylor, Michael Irvin, Bill Goldberg, Steve Austin, Kevin Nash and Dan Marino have all appeared in different Sandler productions.
Kelce showed off his acting and comedy chops as host of Saturday Night Live in March 2023. He will make his television series debut in the upcoming Ryan Murphy series Grotesquerie that premieres Sept. 25 on FX.
It was announced on Tuesday that Kelce will make his feature-film debut in the action-comedy Loose Cannons. He will also host the gameshow Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? for Amazon premiering on Oct. 16.
NFL Fans Have Very Mixed Reactions To The News
The story sounds like it will be a lot of fun. Here’s more information from The Hollywood Reporter:
The premise centers on how every police precinct, at least in this movie’s world, has a crazy, out of control, rule-breaking officer on staff. But rather than pair them with a straight arrow and by the book partner, the premise here is that unhinged person is paired with someone just as out of line as they are.
In Cannons, two loose cannons are forced to partner up after their precincts merge due to budget cuts and no one wants to work with them. The duo end up taking on the cases no one else can.
Fans have been all over the place when it comes to this announcement, with many sharing their excitement for the movie. Some are calling the film, one of the most anticipated sequels, while others simply do not care or want to see this. Interestingly, fans are split on something like this, as the movie should be fun.
“If Adam is calling you funny you got something special travis has got some serious motion,” one user wrote.
“Travis Kelce cameo in Happy Gilmore 2 – That’s actually crazy. Love to see it. This is one of my favorite movies so hopefully the sequel lives up to the hype,” wrote another.
“lmfao travis said he’d like to be part of it and they said say less,” a third joked.
Other fans shared the opposite feelings:
“We don’t need this,” one person said in response to the news.
“I can’t wait for him to eventually star in my favorite genre which is big strong man who doesn’t know how to act around kids teaming up with a child to save the world,” another person tweeed.
“Congratulations Gal Gadot, you may be the second worst actor in history,” a third person wrote.
