The NFL has always featured the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day, and this year specifically, many fans want the league to remove the Cowboys from the Thanksgiving Primetime slot as the team is utterly terrible this year.
Fans are even going as far as to call the Dallas the new Detroit Lions, who everyone can remember watching on Thanksgivings in past years and wishing they wouldn’t. Now, Dallas has taken on the role of one of the worst teams in the league, but still, they will highlight the Thanksgiving Day slate of games.
Fans Want The League To Remove Dallas Cowboys From Thanksgiving

The Cowboys have traditionally held the spotlight in the late afternoon Thanksgiving game, and this year is no different—despite fans calling for a change.
The 2024 season has been nothing short of a nightmare for the Cowboys, who currently sit at 3-5 while grappling with numerous injuries to key players. Just last Sunday, Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott injured his hamstring in a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, putting his availability in jeopardy. If he lands on injured reserve, he’ll be sidelined for the Thanksgiving game, with Cooper Rush stepping in as quarterback until Prescott is medically cleared to return.
Adding to the disappointment, the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving opponent doesn’t bring much excitement either. The New York Giants are slogging through another lackluster season, sitting at 2-7 with almost no realistic shot at the playoffs.
With their season nearly lost, the Giants might soon decide to bench Daniel Jones, depending on the outcome of their upcoming games. If this happens, NFL fans could be watching a Thanksgiving matchup between two backup quarterbacks—a far cry from the high-stakes game many had hoped for.
While no fans think the NFL will flex the Thanksgiving schedule, fans are voicing their opinions that they will not be watching the Thanksgiving day matchup as both of these teams have zero hype around them:
“Please. We’ve seen enough of bad Thanksgiving football for five lifetimes,” one fan said.
“Last year a terrible Cowboys game had 40 million viewers! I don’t see them changing,” another fan wrote.
“Is Dallas turning into the old Detroit? For many years Detroit Thanksgiving game was unwatchable,” a third fan tweeted.
- Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions: 12:30 PM ET on CBS, at Ford Field
- New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys: 4:30 PM ET on FOX, at AT&T Stadium
- Miami Dolphins vs. Green Bay Packers: 8:20 PM ET on NBC, at Lambeau Field
The other two games should be great while the game in the middle will probably have much less viewership.
