‘Another Disappointing Closing Chapter to His Legacy’: NFL Expert Highlights What’s at Stake for Aaron Rodgers’ Potential Final Season

Aaron Rodgers enters what is likely his final NFL season with immense pressure and a legacy hanging in the balance. Now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the four-time MVP aims to end his Hall of Fame career on a high note, but the stakes have never been greater.

Despite his accolades, Rodgers faces skepticism about his ability to deliver at age 41. Ranked 21st among NFL quarterbacks by Sports Illustrated, his placement behind rookies and unproven players has raised concerns. Critics question whether he can adapt to Pittsburgh’s system and elevate a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016.

Rodgers’ move to the Steelers is a gamble for both player and franchise. Some, like former Steelers linebacker James Harrison, predict a rocky season that could even result in Rodgers being benched if the team underperforms. However, NFL coaches and analysts still see flashes of his brilliance, highlighting his late-season performances from 2024 as proof that he can still make an impact.

The Steelers have surrounded Rodgers with talent, including star receiver DK Metcalf and a strong tight-end duo. Yet, his success will depend on his ability to mesh with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, whose preference for motion-heavy schemes differs from Rodgers’ traditional shotgun style. This dynamic could define both the team’s season and Rodgers’ farewell campaign.

NFL Analysis Points Out The Stakes of Aaron Rodgers’ Possible Final Season With Pittsburgh Steelers

Rodgers’ potential final season has highlighted what’s at stake for him. This is detailed more in an analysis by Brooke Pryor for ESPN.

After a prolonged decision-making process, Aaron Rodgers ultimately put off retirement for at least one more season when he signed a one-year deal with the Steelers on June 7. He said two weeks later he’s “pretty sure” this will be his last season.

Rodgers’ tenure in New York was hardly what he or the Jets expected, and Pittsburgh represents an opportunity to distance himself from that tumultuous period. In 2024, Rodgers’ first season since a left Achilles tear, the quarterback averaged 2.69 seconds to throw (fifth fastest among qualified QBs) and a 6.6-yard average throw distance (fifth shortest in the league), per ESPN Research. It marked Rodgers’ only full season as a starter where he recorded an average throw distance below 7.4 yards.

Another year removed from the Achilles injury, 2025 could be the perfect way for Rodgers to end his Hall of Fame career, or it could add another disappointing closing chapter to his legacy.

Pittsburgh’s playoff hopes rest squarely on Rodgers’ shoulders. A strong season could solidify his legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, while a disappointing campaign might tarnish it. For Rodgers, this year represents a final opportunity to change the narrative.

As the 2025 season unfolds, all eyes will be on Rodgers to see if he can turn a one-year rental into a storybook ending or if this chapter concludes with unmet expectations. The stakes could not be higher.
