Following his firing from the Chicago Bears, Matt Eberflus is now seeking new opportunities in the NFL. A recent analysis has identified three potential landing spots where he could revitalize his coaching career and make a significant impact.
The Bears have officially fired Eberflus following a disappointing six-game losing streak, a decision announced after a narrow loss to the Detroit Lions. The head coach, who had a record of 14-32 over three seasons, struggled to secure playoff appearances, ultimately leading the Bears to seek a new direction. General manager Ryan Poles expressed gratitude for his efforts but emphasized the need for change in the leadership of the team.
Eberflus’s tenure was marked by several close games that slipped away due to poor clock management and critical mistakes. The Bears lost multiple one-score games, highlighting a significant issue with finishing games under pressure. This pattern culminated in a last-minute loss to the Lions, where the former Bears coach decision-making was heavily scrutinized, particularly regarding timeouts and play-calling.
To fill the void left by Eberflus, the Bears have named Thomas Brown as the interim head coach. Brown, who recently served as the offensive coordinator, plans to continue calling plays to maintain continuity for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. This move aims to stabilize the team as it prepares for its upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Throughout his time with the Bears, he faced intense scrutiny, especially after firing multiple offensive coordinators in an attempt to improve the team’s performance. His record, particularly in close games, was among the worst in NFL history, contributing to his eventual dismissal.
Bleacher Report’s NFL Analysis List 3 Best Landing Spots for Matt Eberflus After Chicago Bears Firing
If ever Everflus gets hired again in the league, there are three landing spots that can be ideal for him. This is explained more in an analysis by Adam Wells for Bleacher Report.
“Given the lack of success Eberflus had as a head coach with the Bears, particularly the ways they were losing games this season with horrendous clock management, it seems likely he will have to work his way back up to being a head coach.
There’s certainly a non-zero possibility that some team decides to hire Eberflus as a head coach this offseason—historically, the easiest way to get another head-coaching job in any sport is to have been a head coach in the past.
In Eberflus’ case, though, his overall body of work in the NFL strongly suggests he’s someone who is better served being a coordinator rather than a head coach,” Wells wrote.
After being fired by the Chicago Bears, the former NFL head coach is eyeing potential coaching opportunities in the NFL. Analysts suggest that the Dallas Cowboys could consider him for either a head coaching or defensive coordinator role, especially if they part ways with Mike McCarthy.
The Detroit Lions may also look at Chicago’s former coach to replace their defensive coordinator, while the Jacksonville Jaguars could offer him a position on Bill Belichick’s staff if changes occur. Eberflus’s experience and previous success as a defensive coordinator make him a valuable candidate for these teams moving forward.
