NFL Mourns Former Raiders Head Coach Mike White, Dead at 89

Mike White, the former head coach of the Oakland Raiders and a respected figure in both professional and college football, who passed away Sunday at age 89 in Newport Beach, California.
The Raiders organization announced the news Monday, stating: “The Raiders Family is saddened by the passing of Mike White… a long-time NFL and college coach and mentor. The prayers of the entire Raider Nation are with Mike’s family.”
White’s NFL tenure included a pivotal role in the Raiders’ history. He served as quarterbacks and offensive line coach from 1990-1994 before taking over as head coach for the 1995-1996 seasons, compiling a 15-17 record (8-8 in 1995, 7-9 in 1996). His time bridged eras for the franchise during its Oakland years.
White capped his NFL career as an offensive assistant with the St. Louis Rams from 1997-1999, contributing to their Super Bowl XXXIV victory under Dick Vermeil.
Extensive Legacy Beyond the Game
A Bay Area native and Cal alum (four-sport athlete in the 1950s), White made his biggest mark in college football:
- Head coach at Cal (1972-1977): 35-30-1 record; shared Pac-8 title in 1975.
- Head coach at Illinois (1980-1987): 47-41-3 record; three bowl games, including 1984 Rose Bowl; undefeated 1983 Big Ten season.
He also assisted at Stanford and the San Francisco 49ers (1978-1979 under Bill Walsh), helping lay foundations for West Coast offenses that influenced the modern NFL.
Tributes Pour In Across the League
Former players and colleagues remembered White for his integrity and innovation. His coaching tree and mentorship touched generations, from NFL stars to college standouts like Chuck Muncie and quarterbacks Tony Eason and Jack Trudeau.
The NFL lost a pioneer whose career spanned from the Browns’ championship era (as a player reference in tributes) to Super Bowl rings as a coach.
No cause of death was disclosed. White is survived by his family.
Rest in peace to a true NFL and football legend.
