Per multiple reports, the NFL is punishing the New York Giants and Detroit Lions for a series of fights that broke out at their joint practices earlier this week. The league is sending a message that fighting at joint practices will not be tolerated.
Daniel Jones was involved in a fight
As previously discussed on GH, the Lions’ defensive line and the Giants’ offense were involved in a scuffle during Monday’s practice. Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was involved in the brawl. Fortunately, Jones wasn’t injured, but a defensive lineman could have easily knocked the quarterback recovering from a season-ending injury last year out of the practice.
Jones spoke about the incident
Jones didn’t seem to have an issue with the fight when he spoke to the media following practice:
“I mean, situation happens like that, you try to stand up for your guys but I thought it was a good competitive practice all day today,” Jones said (h/t Nick Shook of NFL.com). “We made some plays and did some good things, there’s some things we need to [shore] up for sure. But good intensity and competitive spirit there.”
The league did have an issue with the fight. Obviously, they don’t want quarterbacks to be injured during the preseason, as that would hurt ratings during the regular season. The league has an obligation to stop fights so they can protect their product.
The New York Giants and Detroit Lions were punished
According to Mike Garafolo with the NFL Network, the league fined the Lions and Giants for the multiple fights that broke out earlier this week:
“The NFL confirmed the #Lions and #Giants have each been fined $200k for multiple fights at the joint practices between the clubs earlier this week. Clubs were reminded in a memo last month that fighting and unprofessional conduct at joint practices would not be tolerated.
Unclear if this is the first time teams have been fined for training-camp fights (players have been in the past) but it’s evident the league wants it to be known such scuffles won’t be tolerated moving forward.”
