NFL Executives rank the new coaching hires
The NFL carousel has been non-stop since black Monday. Shortly after the Super Bowl concluded, the final head coaching vacancies were named for the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals. (They hired coordinators of the Philadelphia Eagles staff, who were busy prepping for the Super Bowl.) Now NFL executives have ranked their top coaching hires for next season.

There were five open head coaching positions for the 2023 season. Three of the head coaches hired have no NFL head coaching experience. New Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints, has the best resume of the five.
What the executives think of the new hires
Jeff Howe with The Athletic wrote the results of a poll with nine NFL executives about the new coaching hires. According to the results, two coaches were the executive’s favorites. They were asked who their favorite coaching hire was. The top choice was Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reigh, followed by Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans:
“Panthers head coach Frank Reich received 5.5 votes to edge out DeMeco Ryans (3.5 votes) of the Texans. (One executive split his vote between the two.) Sean Payton (Broncos), Shane Steichen (Colts) and Jonathan Gannon (Cardinals) did not receive any votes. No one from the coaches’ current or most recent organizations was polled to avoid personal biases.”
The poll results from the NFL executives were surprising. Reich didn’t do much in Indianapolis. Though he didn’t have much success with the quarterback situation, his life won’t be easier in that department with the Panthers. Ryans had a great defense with the 49ers, but he’ll have to rebuild a bad Texans team from the ground up.

Payton has the most experience, yet he didn’t receive a single vote. Payton isn’t walking into an easy situation in Denver, but he’s putting together a staff that will build a strong culture in the locker room. It will take a few years to know if these executives made the right call in the poll.
