It’s finally here! The first week of the NFL season is upon us and I’m going to give some tips on how to approach DFS during the season.

DFS can be confusing to first time players, but I will be writing a DFS story each week of the season providing my cash core and others players who should target.

My cash core will consist of a quarterback, a running back, a wide receiver and a tight end that you can use at your own accord.

But this story will touch on some items you need to be aware of submitting your winning lineup into a GPP or cash tournament.

    cmc 3GPP vs. Cash

For inexperienced players, GPP stands for guarantee prize pool, like the Milly Maker on DraftKings. Cash games involve winners of the tournament doubling up their buy-in cost.

Which tournament should you enter? It depends on your goals.

GPPs will play out around 20 percent or less of the entries, while most cash games will award just less than 50 percent of the entries.

You will need to take some chances in big GPP fields to bring home a nice payday, while your cash game lineup can be chalkier to reach the “green.”

The beauty of DraftKings is their 100 GPP fields, commonly called the Hundo.

The Hundo is exactly what it means 100 entries. But these single-entry tournaments may provide some of the best value on the site, paying out 22 percent of the field.

There is a variety of price points in the Hundos. There are tournaments at $1, $3, $5 and $10, depending on your bankroll.

The thoughts of becoming an instant millionaire playing the Milly Maker would be a dream come true. But you will have to defeat field of unlimited entries. The Milly Maker currently has more than 311,000 entries.

You will need an advantage to continue your dream of hitting the big one.

That advantage is weekly single-entry for three-entry tournaments.

Yes you will face some of the top DFS players in single entry and three-entry tournaments, but your bankroll competition is lessen.

The top DFS players will mass entry the Milly Maker with its 150-entry limit. While most casual players will using an entry or two.

The top players have a big advantage in the big GPP fields, mainly more money. But you limit that advantage and improve your chances of finishing in the green with smaller entry fields.

    Bankroll Management

Some players look for the big payout, while others are strictly cash game players and look to build their bankroll gradually.

But you should have a nice split of cash games and GPPs.

I will play 10 lineups in a $.10, $.25, $.50 and $1 GPP tournaments. This equals $18.50 of buy-ins. Then I will sprinkle in some Hundos at different price ranges and a single-entry $12 tournament or two.

The cash games I will play will be only single-entry contests, ranging from $1 up to the $25, depending on bankroll constraints for the week.

The first week of the season I’m doing a 65 percent GPP and 35 percent cash split because I’m playing several $5 entries this week. I plan to be around 60 GPP-40 cash range as the season progresses.

Here is some more bankroll insights!

Danny Carpenter has been writing for Gridiron Heroics since August 2022. I have played fantasy football since 1993 when you had to call your commissioner to submit a lineup, the Monday edition of the USAToday was the holy grail for NFL boxscores and NFL Countdown was the place for early stats. I will be writing articles on the Steelers and fantasy football. Any fantasy football questions, just ask!
